April 2008: In Cuba I was a German Shepherd

Latino Book Club meets on Saturday, 26th April at 3 PM to discuss Ana Menendez' In Cuba I was a German Shepherd.

Last Saturday we met to talk of Ana Menendez' In Cuba I was a German Shepherd. We all thought it was a tough read, especially with all the symbolism and the non-linear story telling style. If you didn't quite get it, you were not alone. We all agreed that nostalgia and loneliness were the dominant emotions.
If you did enjoy it, please share your comments with us.
We also enjoyed Jeremy's great music after our discussion.
Here is the next read for the month of May: Junot Diaz' Drown. We have also decided the book for June, and it is Judith Ortiz Cofer's The Latin Deli.
If you want to read a specific author or writer please send suggestions and they will be added to our box.
Happy readings and don't forget to write comments at our blog site.

FAVORITE STORY:
Mine till now has been MIAMI RELATIVES. The unusual realtives, almost magical on one hand is so crazy, but then again so familiar. We all have that one crazy uncle or aunt.
The story although sad in its own way, somehow breaks from the other stories in the way the sadness is mixed with humor. The humor of "German Shepherd" is much more stronger, but again the sadness of the exiles in the park is so poignant. The domino players are transformed into artifacts in a museum.

The commom thread that runs thru out these stories,is on of longing.Longing for Cuba, the life style, and love. Here in Miami, they are considered mutts,in Cuba they were proud "German Shepherds",with lineage and roots. They know in their hearts, they will probably die, without seeing their land again. They do not have the option to even visit. They are great story tellers. The "Perfect Fruit",was a very sad story.Matilda, was terribly heartbroken in her marriage, and the love she should have been sharing with her husband, she gave to her son. When he fell in love, she was left with nothing. Was the offering of the perfect piece of pie,a new beginnig for them?
I look forward to readin the discussions in the newsletter.
